What to Buy for Your First Surf Session

What to Buy for Your First Surf Session

Starting your surfing journey is exciting, but it can also be a bit overwhelming when it comes to figuring out what gear you need for your first surf session. You don’t need to rush into buying everything, but having the right essentials will make your experience safer, more comfortable, and—most importantly—more fun!

Here’s a beginner’s guide to what you need to buy before you hit the waves for your first surf session:

1. Sun Protection

Spending hours in the sun can lead to painful burns, so don’t forget to protect your skin. Invest in reef-safe sunscreen that won’t harm the environment or irritate your skin. Additionally, consider wearing a hat or surf cap for extra sun protection, especially if you’ll be out for an extended period.

  • Sunscreen: Look for water-resistant, broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen.
  • Hat: A wide-brimmed hat or surf cap can keep the sun off your face and neck while you're paddling out.

2. Wetsuit (If Surfing in Cold Water)

If you're surfing in colder waters, a wetsuit is essential for keeping you warm and comfortable. Wetsuits are made from neoprene, a material that traps a thin layer of water between your skin and the suit, keeping your body insulated.

  • Water Temperature: The thickness of the wetsuit you need depends on the water temperature. For warm waters (above 65°F/18°C), a 2mm wetsuit or even a rash guard is often enough. For cooler waters (below 65°F/18°C), you’ll need something thicker—around 4mm or 5mm.
  • Fit: Make sure the wetsuit fits snugly without being too tight. It should feel like a second skin to ensure you stay warm and have the mobility to paddle and move on the board.

3. Rash Guard or Surf Shirt

Even if you’re surfing in warm water and don’t need a wetsuit, a rash guard is still a great idea. Rash guards protect your skin from the sun and prevent chafing from your surfboard.

  • UV Protection: Many rash guards are made with UPF-rated fabric to protect you from harmful UV rays, making them an essential piece of gear for your first surf session.
  • Comfort: The extra layer also helps reduce irritation from the board, especially around your chest and arms.

4. Boardshorts or Swimsuit

For your first surf session, you’ll want comfortable boardshorts or a swimsuit underneath your wetsuit or rash guard. Choose something that stays secure while you’re moving and doesn’t ride up when paddling or catching waves.

  • Boardshorts: Opt for lightweight, quick-drying boardshorts that allow for freedom of movement. Make sure they have a secure waistband to keep them in place while you’re paddling.
  • Swimsuit: If you prefer a one-piece or bikini, just ensure it’s designed for active use, as you’ll be moving around a lot!

5. Leash (is available with the rental of the surfboard)

A surfboard leash is a must-have accessory for safety. The leash attaches your surfboard to your ankle and prevents the board from getting swept away if you wipe out. This is crucial for beginners, as it helps you keep the board nearby without having to swim back to it.

  • Length: Choose a leash that’s about the same length as your surfboard. For longboards, a leash between 8’ and 10’ should work well.
  • Comfort: Make sure the leash fits comfortably around your ankle and doesn’t cause irritation when you’re paddling.

6. Surf Wax

Surf wax is essential for maintaining grip on your board, especially if you're surfing without a soft-top. The wax helps prevent slipping while paddling and riding the waves.

  • Type of Wax: There are different types of wax depending on the water temperature. For warmer water, go for tropical wax, while cold water requires cold water wax. Make sure you get the right kind for the conditions you’ll be surfing in.
  • How to Use: Simply rub the wax over the deck of your board in a crisscross pattern to build up a grip that’ll keep you stable on your feet.

7. Waterproof Bag or Backpack

A waterproof bag is a great way to store your essentials when you’re on the go. It’ll help keep your phone, wallet, keys, and dry clothes safe from splashes or unexpected rain.

  • Dry Bag: Consider a waterproof dry bag for keeping your valuables safe while you’re on the beach or in the water.
  • Backpack: If you’re bringing extra gear like snacks, a towel, or a change of clothes, a waterproof backpack will come in handy.

Don't forget to have fun!

While it’s tempting to buy all the gear in the store, remember that you don’t need everything on your first surf session. Stick to the basics and focus on what will keep you safe, comfortable, and ready to learn. As you gain experience, you can slowly build up your surf wardrobe and try new gear.
